"Response"(1 Samuel 1:19-28)

1 Samuel 1:19-28

We are taught that when we have a need we go to God in prayer and pray earnestly.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Matthew 7:7-8 ESV

Hannah does a good job of praying. She prays earnestly to the point that that the priest Eli thought she was drunk.

And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” But Hannah answered, “No, my Lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.

1 Samuel 1:14-15 ESV

We need to pause and look at her response to God and why she was praying for a son. Hannah begs God for a son because her duty to God and her husband is to have children. God gives her a son so she can fulfil her duty and glorify God. What is her response? She gives back to God what he gave her and further glorifies God.

For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

1 Samuel 1:27-28 ESV

Hannah prayed for a son, so that she could glorify God. She even names her son to glorify God and show God’s hand in his birth.

And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”

1 Samuel 1:20 ESV

Hannah does not forget her promise, but does keep it at the appropriate time.

But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there forever.”

1 Samuel 1:22 ESV

Hannah did not forget that her son was from God. It is easy to forget what God has done for us. God wants us to remember what He has done for us. Hannah knows that Samuel is a gift from God.

When we come to church and sing praise songs along with our rituals, they are all worthless if we forget the grace God has given us.

Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

1 Samuel 1:28 ESV

Hannah gave back to God her best. There was nothing better she could give. Although she will see Samuel, he is to spend the rest of his life away from her and his father. Samuel will be God’s for his lifetime.

Christians fast, pray, do good works not because they are trying to gain something, but because we have already received our grace and we are expressing our gratitude.

In the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. We read about the wealthy man who gives bags of gold to his servants. His servants invest the money and make more for their master, but there is one who does not. He has no place in the master’s kingdom.

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Matthew 25:14-18, 29-30 ESV

Like Hannah, let us give our best to God in the understanding that this has come from God and the best way to glorify God is to share his blessings with others.

"Citizens of Heaven" (Philippians 3:10-21)

Philippians 3:10-21

In Paul’s letter to the church of Philippi, he gives and them, and us, much advice about what we need to do before we get to heaven and be with Jesus. First, we have to admit our journey is continuing and not over, yet.

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

Philippians 3:12 ESV

Some Christians believe that once we accept Jesus as our savior, we are done. However, we need to remember that accepting Jesus is just the beginning of our Christian walk. We must repent of our sins and bear our cross daily.

If we start to think that we are more righteous than others, we judge. Accepting Jesus as our savior does not make us more righteous.  In fact, the church is a place where we come together to encourage each other. It does not help to pick apart one another from their mistakes. Jesus has told us not to judge others because He has the job to judge. In Matthew, Jesus tells us this.

For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Matthew 7:2-5 ESV

Second, we must discipline ourselves to be better Christians.  Philippians 3 does not give precise instructions about what we are to do, but it does give some clues about what not to do.

Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

Philippians 3:19 ESV

Paul did not tell us to stop eating but alerts us to the problem of self-centeredness.  These people whose stomachs are their gods have little concern or love for others. They only want their own glory. Earthly things are those things that do not focus on heaven.

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Philippians 3:20 ESV

Heaven is where God is reigning. If God is not in you, you are in hell. It depends on who is in you and not where you are. Wherever you go, you can be in heaven because God is with you. When God is in us, it is easier to live a God centered life which focuses on pleasing God and putting God first before my own desire and myself.

In conclusion, we need to be patient and be practical while we wait. Let us make efforts to discipline ourselves to please Jesus, so we will be even more ready to meet him when we do.

"Better Christians"(Philippians 1:3-11)

Philippians 1:3-11

The word "Christian" came from the Jews to distinguish those Jews who were followers of Christ. The early Christians did not yet have the New Testament or the gospels and had to rely on letters. One of the most prolific writers of letters was Paul and most of the New Testament is composed of his letters to the early church. He wrote many letters to the church for different and sometimes multiple reasons. In Philippians, Paul writes this letter to the Philippians to encourage them to continue to do their good Christian practices.

There are three things we get from Paul’s message in this short passage.

  1. Practicing love requires knowledge and depth of insight. There are many ways to show love. We can support missionaries and do not need to boast about it. We need to make efforts to practice better love and take some time to think how to show this love.

'And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, '

 Philippians 1:9-10

  1. We need to make efforts to discern what is best in different situations. It is not always easy to know what to do. We have examples of Christians who sacrifice their families for the church. Surely, it is best to make sacrifices for the Lord and sacrificing time with our families is just one of them. The problem with this is that sometimes children are resentful towards their parents for putting the church before them. Also, as generations pass, new standards are created. So, what is best? Do we stay with old traditions, or do we change with the times? Whatever we do, we need to do everything for Jesus. Are we doing this for me or God?

so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

Philippians 1:10 ESV

Although there is no perfect answer, we need to put God first.  What decisions are going to glorify God? If you can be confident that the decision you made glorifies God, you are doing well.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6:33 ESV

  1. We need to make efforts to bring fruit of righteousness. We need to make efforts to improve. It is not enough to rest on our confidence in salvation. We need to struggle to be better.  There are so many things that we cannot cling to in our new life, and we must remove them in order to be blameless. This does not happen immediately, but over time, a slow sanctification will happen.

so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Philippians 1:10-11 ESV

Let us make an effort to love each other more and put God first in all of our decisions.
