God's Promise

Hebrews 6:13-20

 

What does it mean when God swears on Himself? No one is greater than God, so God could only swear on Himself.

 

Hebrews 6:13 ESV

[13] For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself,  

 

With God, we know that when God makes a promise, it is 100% going to happen. No one else boast this. However, this asks the promise, "What did God promise?"

 

Hebrews 6:19-20 ESV

[19] We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, [20] where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

 

We know that we have salvation because of what Jesus had done. We have an “anchor for our souls” and that is talking about salvation. But what do we need to do for salvation?

 

John 3:16 ESV

[16]  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  

 

We need to believe in Jesus. This means living in faith every day. We need to keep our habits of faith, rest in God's faith and confess our sins. It also means sometimes to do nothing and wait for God to act and accept His will. We need to run back to God when we fail like Abraham.  

 

Hebrews 6:13-15 ESV

[13] For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, [14] saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” [15] And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.

 

Abraham had faith in God. Yes, Abraham made mistakes and did some terrible things to his family and tried to help God in disastrous ways. Because Abraham believed God and had faith in God's promises, he could endure.  God fulfilled His promises to Abraham despite mistakes Abraham made.

 

Being a witness measure showing that God is real. That means living a righteous life. That means waiting for God and being faithful even though the world shows something different to God's promises.  

 

Yet, we need to remember that the God who promised to Abraham is the same God who promises to us. God requires us one thing. To believe what God has promised, He will keep it.  

 

Our story does not rest on our strength. It is kept by God's promises!

Hebrews 6:13-20 New International Version

The Certainty of God’s Promise

13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 

14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”[a] 

15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.

16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 

17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 

18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 

19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 

20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

Patience by Faith 

Hebrew 6:13-20 

The author of Hebrews describes who God is by the promise God gave Abraham.  God kept His promise to Abraham and this is the same God we worship. 

saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.

Hebrews 6:14-15 ESV

After Abraham waited patiently, he received his promise. We need to wait patiently and need to also be righteous while waiting.

“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.

Luke 12:35-36 ESV

We need to have faith. Genuine faith will show in a righteous life. If our life is not righteous, we are not showing genuine faith. If we struggle to live righteously, we need faith. Our faith can be strengthened by hope in Jesus and trusting in Jesus.

Hebrews 6:19 ESV

It goes back to who God is. God kept His promise with Abraham and He is a trustworthy God. God will always keep his promises. 

This does not mean you will have an easy oath or avoid struggles. God has never promised that. Abraham endured many struggles, tests, and disappointments, but he had faith in God. This faith gave Abraham comfort and strength to continue during hardships. Abraham relied on God's word.

God kept His promise to Abraham, and he will keep His promises with us. We need to wait and let the Holy Spirit come on us. We do not know when Jesus will return and it is not for us to know. We just need to believe Jesus will return. We also need to live as witness about Jesus. Living a righteous life will show Jesus to others.

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 1:6-8 ESV 

We also must remember that Jesus has done all the work for us and is in Heaven.

Hebrews 6:20 ESV

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
