Apr 12, 2026 “Sabbath: A Holy Declaration That Overcomes the World”(Psalm 92:2, 4-5, 7, 12-14)

Psalm 92:2, 4-5, 7, 12-14 NIV

2 proclaiming your love in the morning
    and your faithfulness at night,
4 For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;
    I sing for joy at what your hands have done.
5 How great are your works, Lord,
    how profound your thoughts!
7 that though the wicked spring up like grass
    and all evildoers flourish,
    they will be destroyed forever.
12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
13 planted in the house of the Lord,
    they will flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
    they will stay fresh and green,

Sabbath: A Holy Declaration That Overcomes the World

Psalm 92 is the only Psalm for the Sabbath. We understand that the Sabbath is a day of rest, yet many of us are very busy on the Sabbath. There are several volunteers who do many jobs besides the pastor and worship team
However, the Sabbath is a confession of faith in God. No matter what is happening, we will proclaim God's love.

Psalm 92:2 ESV
[2] to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night,

We put our trust in God, but we need to declare that we experience God's love. We need to do this first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. Instead of over thinking, we need to confess God's faithfulness. Once you lay down everything to God, then you can have a deep rest.

Psalm 92:7 ESV
[7] that though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction forever;

It is easy to be discouraged when we see so many wicked people prospering, and so many righteous people suffer and do not prosper. Yet, we need to remember that the success of the wicked does not last. Grass grows quickly but its roots are shallow. It dries easily and is easily destroyed.

Psalm 92:12 ESV
[12]  The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

The wicked will eventually be destroyed forever whereas the righteous will grow like a palm tree or a cedar. The trees grow slowly and their roots grow down deeply. The roots hold the trees in place and after many years the trees are large and mighty.

Psalm 92:13-14 ESV
[13] They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God. [14] They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green,

Still there is more for the righteous who are planted in the courts of the Lord. God's kingdom is eternal and allows for righteousness to grow deeply and completely being nourished in good things. The ultimate ending is lives that produce fruit well into our old age.

Yes, the wicked will have worldly success for a brief time, but eventually it will pass. For those who surrender everything, who surrender all control to God in faithfulness, we will be like well-watered trees in the courts of God.

Let us praise God first thing in the morning and the last thing we do at night.
