The
Truth That Sets Us Free
John 8:32
Many people want freedom. They want to be from
debt or free from obligations. People want their freedom to do what they want and
when they want. However, often times when people obtain their freedom, they long
for the time when they had less freedom. Retired people who have money and are free
from their work, but they find this hard. They want to be busy and have purpose.
John 8:32 ESV
[32] and you will know the truth, and the truth
will set you free.”
When Jesus says that He will set you free, we
need to ask what that freedom is. The world tells us what we should pursue such
as financial freedom, but when we get it, we are not satisfied. The truth Jesus
talks about is him. Jesus is true freedom and real truth.
In Jesus, we can be the people Jesus wants us
to be. Jesus is a light that exposes us to the truth. That to allow us to see the
truth. The truth that we can never get to heaven by our work or righteous behavior.
The truth that through God's grace we can be saved.
John 8:12 ESV
[12] Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am
the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have
the light of life.”
Then "You will know the truth “What does
that mean? This is not knowing Jesus as a fact but knowing Jesus in a personal way.
Although it is important to know who Jesus is historically or His role in the Bible,
it is important to know Jesus as our personal savior.
The world is always telling us that we need to
perform and be self-reliant. Yet, Jesus tells us that we need to remain in His love.
Freedom in this sense is not doing just want to
do what they want to. The world tells us that this is freedom from something. The
freedom Jesus offers us is transformation. The light dispelled the darkness, but
it also shows us what path we should take.
Christian freedom is the power to live the way
we were created to live. To live as sons and daughters of God. We are not captured
by the thoughts and judgements of others and world. We do not have to worry about
protecting ourselves and then we have the freedom to forgive others.
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
[17] Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is
a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
The truth does not just reshape us—but it renews
us and reshapes us into the children of God. Freedom is found in longing for
the truth which is from the God who made us. We can live in peace, forgive without
bitterness and follow the righteous path.
Let's continue to study who Jesus is but let Jesus live in you. His truth will shine in you and then your life will be a testament of who Jesus is.
