Nehemiah
2:11-20
At the Nehemiah is set, there are few foreigners
in Jerusalem, but the few foreigners who were there did not want to lose their influence
or power. When Nehemiah arrives in Jerusalem, he says nothing for three days. Nehemiah
is careful to focus on God only and not to be influenced by others. People in Jerusalem
were waiting and watching for Nehemiah to do or say something. They knew Nehemiah
represented the king.
Nehemiah knew that people were watching him, but
he wanted to protect what God had placed on his heart. This is why Nehemiah kept
quiet and inspected the walls and gates at night.
The Holy Spirit filled Nehemiah and this allowed
him to inspire others.
Nehemiah 2:17 ESV
[17] Then I said to them, “You see the trouble
we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build
the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.”
External influences can only motivate us so much.
True and stronger motivation will come faith in God.
Nehemiah 2:19-20 ESV
[19] But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah
the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised
us and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the
king?” [20] Then I replied to them, “The God of heaven will make us prosper, and
we his servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or claim
in Jerusalem.”
Satan tries to fill us with depression and discouragement,
so we will not do God's work to expand others.
