"Decision Making" (1 Samuel 26:1-12)

1 Samuel 26:1-12

When we live our lives, we have to make hundreds of decisions every day. Many of the these decisions are not important but sometimes they might be very important.

In this passage we read how Saul makes another attempt to find and kill David. With 3,000 elite troops, Saul goes out to find and kill David. David has already shown Saul that he does not want to bring harm to Saul. In fact, David has spared Saul's life when he could have taken it. David continues to protect Saul as God's anointed.

But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?”

1 Samuel 26:9 ESV

David puts God and His statutes as the most important goals in his life. David is not out for revenge and is not swayed by others but keeps to his promise to serve God.

The Lord forbid that I should put out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. But take now the spear that is at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.”

1 Samuel 26:11 ESV

Because of this thinking, David can show mercy even with this perfect opportunity to kill Saul. There is a spear next to Saul's head and everyone was in a deep sleep. They had a weapon, and no one would know who had done the deed. David continues to listen to God and not to others.

A man after God's own heart pursues what God wants. David could have removed his greatest threat but puts his faith in God. David made decisions to please God and not benefit himself. We need to put God first and make decisions to please God.

So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head, and they went away. No man saw it or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them.

1 Samuel 26:12 ESV

David does the impossible .  He enters the enemy camp of 3,000 well trained soldiers without detection and steals the king's spear and water jug and leaves the camp without detection. They were able to do this because God had put the army into a deep sleep.

God did not put Saul into a state of  evil. God wants everyone to come back to Him. David also wanted this for Saul. He wanted Saul to return to God.

We might fail, but God is always waiting for us to return. We just need to make the effort to return.
