"Believing the Sufficiency of Christ" (John 14:1-14)

The book of John is a very powerful and a favorite gospel of many.

Jesus is more than enough for us.

1.      The problems of the mind

2.      Proclamation

3.      Promises

         1.      The problems of the mind

A.     Unrest of the hearts

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.

John 14:1 ESV

Whenever your mind is not at peace, it is hard to do anything. Praying and focusing on Jesus is difficult when your heart is troubled. Jesus knew this about his disciples. They were upset hear that he was leaving them. We need the peace of the Lord to pray and do God's will.

B.     Unbelief

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

John 14:5 ESV

Thomas was honest and showed his unbelief .

C.      Underestimating Jesus

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 14:8-9 ESV

Philip is saying that God is more than Jesus. Jesus is God. He is the same as God, and we limit Jesus when we have problems accepting Jesus as God.

2.      Proclamation of Jesus

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6 ESV

This is one of the most powerful statement in history. Jesus tells us clearly that the only way to God is through Jesus.

Thomas Kempis

German Canon

Without the way, there is no going; without the truth, there is no knowing; without the life, there is no living.

Who is Jesus to you? vs. 6

I am all you need to keep going. The way

I am all you need to keep knowing. The truth

I am all you need to keep living. The life

3.      Promise if you believe

Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

John 14:11 ESV

A.     Access having a relationship with the father

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:36 ESV

B.     Ability to perform greater works

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

John 14:12 ESV

C.      Authority to Ask Anything in Jesus Name

Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

John 14:13-14 ESV

We have access and are given an ability because Jesus has authority.

Prayer becomes a tradition and not done with expectations.

Jesus is sufficient for us and we need to depend on God only. Everything we need is in Jesus.
