Message: Be Ye Perfect As Your Heavenly Father Is Perfect

Grounding Scripture(s): Matthew 5: 20-48

Introduction

People tend to have difficulties with the expression “Be Ye Perfect as Your Heavenly Father Is Perfect”; these include even many well-meaning Christians. How can we be perfect? They lament in disbelieve. They feel this is farfetched. Though the idea entailed in the word “perfect” here well implies attainment of our being in the end or the ideal completeness of our being, nevertheless, in us that will imply spiritual growth. For in God, perfection is not attained, but exists eternally, (John 3:16b). This makes every human being a ‘seeker’ of God. If you are a seeker of God, you are a perfect man. This is what Christ is talking about here.

What you must know.

1.A growing Christian (in the sense of seeking God) is being as perfect as his Heavenly Father is perfect-1 Corinthians 2:6; Heb. 5:14.

It is in this respect that God declared Noah as righteous in the old world in his generation-Gen. 6:9.

2. We draw near to God’s Eternal nature, look into it, captivated by it and are transformed into perfect men that God declares us to be-2 Corinthians 3:18. Heb. 12:-14.

3. To learn of Christ is to be perfect as Father-Matthew 11:28-30. To walk with God is not to burden ourselves. Therefore, when Jesus makes the above statement, it is not to burden you. Learn from Him-Heb. 12:1-3.

Conclusion

Jesus’ call to perfection indicates the life style of the Kingdom of God. This lifestyle is not only for the future, but also in the now. The LORD Himself enables us by His mercy and grace. Our part is to be willing seekers of God, will to walk with God by faith in Christ Jesus.
