July 28, 2024 "The Mission" (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)

The Mission

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

When Paul went to Athens, his mission was not very successful. Few people came over to Christ. After his failures, he wrote this letter to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 2:3 ESV

[3] And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling,

Paul had attempted to use his strength of eloquence and knowledge. He had failed and he acknowledged that he needed to rely on God's strength and not his own.

1 Corinthians 2:1-2 ESV

[1] And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. [2] For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

If we spend too much time preparing and rely on our resources, we will miss the opportunity to see God act. We will not experience God's miracles and works if we do everything on our own strength.

God cares for everyone. Missions are about God's heart. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can be led to use our strengths to do God's work on the mission field.

Jonah 4:11 ESV

[11] And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”

The true power of Missions comes not from our resources and abilities but our obedience to the Holy Spirit. It will only be through the Holy Spirit that God can work perfectly.

July 21, 2024 "Life through the Spirit" (Romans 8:1-6)

Life through the Spirit

Romans 8:1-6

The book of Roman's was a letter written by Paul in which his original intention was asking for money. The church in Rome was well known for its faith, and yet Paul still wanted to preach the Gospel.

In chapter 8, Paul talks about how the Holy Spirit is with Christians. Paul also talks about the Law. The law is not a bad thing to burden us, but how to live in God's righteousness. Not following the law will lead to death. The fact is that obeying the law will lead to life.

When God saw that man could not keep the law, God did not dismiss the law. If God had abolish the Law there would be no need to send Jesus. Indeed God sent Jesus to fulfill the law. Jesus did not have to face Judgement. He came down to bear the burden of man.

God is just. The law had to be upheld. It was part of God's kingdom. When Jesus fulfilled the law, he took our punishment. The law can no longer condem us since Jesus paid the price.

The law of the Spirit requires faith. The Holy Spirit gives us faith.

The outcome of how we share the gospel is determined by whether or not the Holy Spirit is present or not. The method is not important as is whether the Holy Spirit is present.

Jesus commanded us to go. We should pray because no matter how much we prepare or work, it is only the Holy Spirit can give faith.

Romans 8:5 ESV

[5] For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

This is more than doing good works. Having faith does not come from doing good deeds. Having faith will give us a desire to do good deeds. Living according to the flesh does not include God. They live their lives without accepting or acknowledging God.

It is not enough to want to be a Christian. We need to have the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:6 ESV

[6] For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

Accepting Jesus is just beginning. We have to continuously pray. We have to learn and hear about the Gospel. We have to practice our faith.

Back To Life

Back To Life
CCLI Song #7183538
Ben Fielding, Brian Johnson, Chris Davenport, Phil Wickham, Reuben Morgan, Zahriya Zachary

Chorus

(I'm) No longer I who live

but Christ in me

For I’ve been born again

my heart is free

The hope of heaven before me

the grave behind

Hallelujah You brought me back to life

Verse 1

I won’t forget the moment

I heard You call my name

Out of the grip of darkness

into the light of grace

Just like Lazarus

oh You brought me back to life

Verse 2

Where there was dead religion

Now there is living faith

All of my hope and freedom

I found in Jesus’ name

Just like Lazarus

oh You brought me back to life

Chorus

(I'm) No longer I who live but Christ in me

For I’ve been born again my heart is free

The hope of heaven before me the grave behind

Hallelujah You brought me back to life

Verse 3

When something says I am guilty

I’ll point to the price You paid

When something says I’m not worthy

I’ll point to that empty grave

Just like Lazarus

oh You brought me back to life

Chorus

(I'm) No longer I who live but Christ in me

For I’ve been born again my heart is free

The hope of heaven before me the grave behind

Hallelujah You brought me back to life

Verse 4

How can I begin to thank You

For all that You’ve done for me

Jesus to fully praise You

it will take all eternity

Just like Lazarus

oh You brought me back to life

July 14, 2024 "Is God Fair?" (Malachi 3:13-18)

Is God Fair?
Malachi 3:13-18

Sometimes it seems that God is not fair. We see faithful Christians not get ahead or suffer. We often cannot see the fairness in the way God treats us or others. We might say that there are secret sins or some other reason to rationalize their misfortunes.

Malachi 3:15 ESV
[15] And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’”

We see that the wicked were prospering and the righteous were suffering. However, we see that God works in ways we do not understand.

Malachi 3:16-17 ESV
[16] Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. [17] “They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.

God knows our pain and grieves with us. He has great plans and it is for us. The suffering we endure because of our righteousness. God sees all things and knows who fear him. He knows the difference between those who perform good deeds and those who want to have a relationship with God.

This relationship can be maintained through prayer, righteous worship and fellowship. It is not about just doing good deeds, it is to lead a life with a relationship with God.

God is not our tool but a person who wants a relationship with us. There are many who see God as an instrument to get what they want. Even when we do not sin and do what is right, there are times when life is not fair.

One of the reasons we do not believe that God is fair is that we do not believe in Judgement Day. Historically Christians have been waiting for Jesus to return and look to disasters as omens to His return. Many Christians now think it will come but not in my lifetime.

The anticipation is disappearing because so often we have tried to predict the day. Instead, we should live as preparing for it. We should live as if today was the last day.

The world can often seem unfair. If we truly believe God will come back, we will live with hope and not worry about the unfair world
